I will post the list we are studying on my agenda page.
I will send home the weekly list each week on the first day of the week, as a cursive practice tool and study list. If you lose the list or wish to have your student study their words independently please try my SPELLING CITY page: https://www.spellingcity.com/gstark/ Tests are on THURSDAY, unless there are 4 days in that week and then the test will be on Friday. We DO NOT make up spelling tests. Workbooks are completed during the week and turned in for grading by Friday.
We will begin with chapter 1 and progress through the social studies text in order. I hand out the WINK on the day we start a new lesson. Students are expected to complete their Wink as we go through the lesson and chapter. During the first quarter ONLY, I will award 5 bonus points to their test score if their Wink is completely and accurately completed. They earn fewer bonus points for incomplete or inaccurate notes. The use of a study guide supports the habit and skill of note taking, which is an important skill as they progress in school.
The Wink contains EVERYTHING they will need to know for the test! Please review them frequently with your child and just before the test to ensure they are prepared for their exam. Throughout the chapter and usually during every lesson, students will complete a worksheet about the lesson. They are expected to use their book for these assignments, unless it is a text companion and then the information they will need is on the back. These activities provide an opportunity to achieve a good grade to offset a poor test grade (if needed).
Science - I am excited to announce that we will be using an interactive science curriculum, called "Mystery Science" from time to time this year.
Reading - Fourth grade will no longer be switching classes. We will use some stories from our reading book, and take tests every week. I select the stories to support other learning topics and activities. We will also do at least 3 novel studies. We will progress from an easy novel to more difficult and lengthy novels through the year. We will read the chapters together and after lessons on focus skills students will complete a chapter packet. After reading the entire novel we will have a final quiz.
Math - We will incorporate Zearn into our Eureka Math curriculum. Zearn is an interactive website that is aligned with Eureka, and we will also have workbooks to go along with our math program! We'll begin using Zearn before Labor Day and I will be sending home passwords and parent letters after the first week of school. We have weekly Zearn lesson goals. Students are expected to complete a certain amount of lessons each week. I will begin grading workbooks AFTER the first midterm progress reports go home. We also use Xtramath to improve number fluency and ALL students must progress from addition facts to division facts BEFORE the end of the year.
MATH HOMEWORK: Homework is graded using the following guidelines. If the student FULLY completes homework (with complete effort) they will receive 2 points. Partial completion will earn them 1 point. This usually happens if a student only completes work in class or forgets to take it home to complete. IF YOUR STUDENT STRUGGLES with the homework, please have your student write what they understand and what they are struggling with. Then sign their homework. I will work with them in class AND they will receive a FULL 2 points. Students will receive 0 points IF they lose their work or leave it at home. I total up all points and divide by total points possible. HOMEWORK should never take more than 30 minutes! I am a parent and I know the struggle. I want them to wrestle with the problems but not become frustrated. 30 minutes is enough, and have them write what they are struggling with and then sign it and return it for credit. Typically, we have more than enough time to complete work in school, but many children don't use their time well and need to finish at home.
